After developing a deeper understanding of Baukultur roots in the different European countries, the second Seminar Series is dedicated to “themes” and “periods” that have characterised the Swiss practice and debate.

André Bideau, architecture historian and theorist, will develop a portrait of a society in the city of Zurich after the Second World War – a city in which resistance to rigid modernist urban planning began to emerge through the Zürcher Arbeitsgruppe für Städtebau (ZAS). In this sense, ZAS can be understood as a precursor to an awakening Baukultur movement, as it placed the totality and diversity of the city at the forefront rather than its optimal organization.
