Building culture in rural areas: developing services of general interest together

The project combines building culture with services of general interest in rural areas to secure public services and ensure the long-term usability of historically valuable buildings through joint strategies.

Project description

The project aims to develop innovative solutions for how historically and culturally significant buildings can be used in the future to secure services of general interest, such as post offices, doctor’s surgeries and grocery shops, in the long term. With the help of co-creation processes in exemplary municipalities, sustainable transformation strategies are developed in collaboration with politicians, administrators, businesses and the local population. The aim is to preserve attractive and functional village centres while simultaneously addressing social and ecological challenges.

The project is timely and necessary, given the dynamic process of restructuring services of general interest and reshaping the physical appearance of rural communities to expand the understanding of building culture and its practical application.

Project implementation

Exemplary case studies and research results are presented in a travelling exhibition. The exhibition serves as input for three local co-creation processes. The results of the project will provide policy recommendations for better integration of building culture and services of general interest in rural areas. In addition, a network of practitioners will be established to promote the exchange and implementation of the findings.
