Transformation of rural life in the Mittelland
The project investigates the evolution of rural life and farm building culture on the Swiss Plateau since the 20th century, proposing adaptation strategies related to contemporary socio-economic and climate challenges.
Project description
The project investigates how socio-economic, regulatory and environmental factors have shaped rural life and the culture of agricultural buildings on the Swiss Plateau throughout the 20th century. The research focuses on the historical transformation of farm buildings, with particular attention to the effects of public policies, regulatory frameworks and market dynamics on their evolution. The aim is to develop forward-looking strategies to adapt agricultural infrastructure to current and future challenges, particularly in relation to food security, climate change and the energy transition.
Background
The Swiss Plateau, the country’s agricultural heartland, currently faces significant pressures from climate change and the need to preserve farmland amid growing urbanisation. By developing sustainable adaptation strategies for agricultural buildings, the project addresses these tensions. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, it draws on insights from architecture, socio-economics, and spatial planning. The findings are intended to benefit agricultural professionals, spatial planners, and policymakers, thereby making a significant contribution to Switzerland's ecological and social transition.
Project implementation
The project adopts a co-creative research approach involving key stakeholders such as farmers, cantonal authorities, and civil society organisations through workshops, exhibitions, and other participatory events. Results will be presented publicly at local markets to stimulate civic discussion. The project also plans to produce a documentary in collaboration with Swiss Radio and Television (SRF), as well as an exhibition at the Ballenberg Swiss Open-Air Museum, with the aim of improving public access to the knowledge generated. These initiatives are intended to build consensus around adaptation strategies and promote the adoption of sustainable practices in rural development.
