After developing a deeper understanding of Baukultur roots in the different European countries, the second Seminar Series is dedicated to “themes” and “periods” that have characterised the Swiss practice and debate.

In Switzerland, with its mountainous topography, a distinctive Baukultur of infrastructure construction emerged during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Roads, railways, and eventually motorways required the construction of countless bridges across challenging terrain and within spectacular landscapes. Engineers Jürg Conzett and Eugen Brühwiler dig deep in the genealogy of Swiss structural Baukultur – many of these built structures form today an integral part of Switzerland’s built cultural heritage.
